mcdonald’s, being the go-to healthy food provider for most serious athletes, has partnered with the rock-n-rock  marathon series.

no, i’m not kidding.  mcdonald’s is sponsoring a marathon series.

which further proves that marathoning (particularly half-marathons) has gone from an event for serious runners training for personal records to a bucket-list checkmark for non-runners.

It seems like a sell-out for the marathon, sort of like letting a cigarette company sponsor a marathon. The Rock n Roll Marathon will lose credibility, I think.

That said, what’s wrong with bucket-listers who got out there and are running farther than they’ve ever run before? Is that such a terrible thing? Us fatties have to have something to strive for!

uh oh! i knew i was going to stir up some trouble with that comment! i love the bucket-list crowd and ABSOLUTELY encourage them to take up running and to push themselves to accomplish more than they thought possible.

    BUT.

the marathon is a race. not a 7hr endurance slog. i’m not talking about first time marathoners that run it for the purpose of accomplishing a goal. my beef is with the 7hr charity ‘runners’ that have never before ran a road race but decide to train a couple days a week so that they can say they finished the boston marathon but then never run again in their life. i encourage people to take up running as a lifestyle, not as a ‘one and done’ conquest that they reach and then leave behind.

i hope i clarified… i ABSOLUTELY don’t want to discourage anyone from running!
